August Favourites

Welcome to my first ever monthly favourites post. I'm not committing to doing these every month, but there has been a few things which I have been really enjoying this month, so I want to witter on about them here, if that's okay with you of course.

Berry Smoothie

Homemade Smoothies

Recently I've been making a lot more of an effort to eat more fruit, as it's never been something I would snack on, always choosing chocolate instead. To help me with this my sister got me addicted to these, they're so good and taste almost like ice cream, but with none of the guilt! I buy frozen berries from Sainsburys and put them in the blender with 2 bananas, milk and yoghurt and it always satisfies my sweet cravings. They're brilliant for using up fruit which is going a bit past it's best as well.

WeightWatchers app, Scales and Measuring tape

Being back on WeightWatchers

I originally joined WeightWatchers back in January last year, and managed to lose 2 stone and two dress sizes in the space of 6 months. I stopped it when I moved out of my flat, and managed to kind of keep most of it off. However, I weighed myself a few weeks ago and got a big shock, so I have rejoined for 3 months to hopefully get me back down to the weight I was last year, and maybe even lose a bit more? I love being on WeightWatchers because I never feel guilty about eating treats when they are in my points for the day or week, and I find it very easy to stick to and I get amazing results. I lost 5lb in my first week this time, and have been losing a steady amount every week since.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch Complete Box Set

Sabrina The Teenage Witch Box Set

I know I've mentioned this before, but I loved Sabrina when I was younger, I watched it all the time, and even bought the magazines. Does anyone else remember the blue hair mascara as the free gift? After moaning for years that it should come out as a box set, the day I saw it, it was immediately in my Amazon basket! I'm up to season 5 now in my watch through, and I still want my very own Salem the cat. He is a lot funnier and more sarcastic to me now that I'm older. Anyone else love this show as much as me?

Oriflame The One Volume Blast Mascara

Oriflame Volume Blast Mascara

I got this in my goody bag from the Oriflame Event I went to back in May, and since switching to wearing mascara instead of eyeliner, I have worn it faithfully every day since. It doesn't make my eyelashes itch like some mascaras do, and it gives me a beautiful wide awake look, with no clumping and lots of length and volume. I am a complete convert to their mascaras and I will be repurchasing it once it runs out!

This is one of those things you hear a lot of hype about, but you just dismiss as something you wouldn't like straight away based on the few things you hear. Rich was intrigued as to what it was like though and we wound up watching one of Alfie's Minecraft videos, then another, and another and another. Rich bought the game on his PC and we have been playing it almost non-stop since. It is so addictive, and really appeals to the Sims player in me, creating and crafting things but the combat side of it scares the living daylights out of me. I have physically jumped and screamed so often when things have tried to kill me that I will now only go into darkened areas with Rich sat next to me because I get so scared.

That's it for my August favourites, I hope you have enjoyed this different style of post from me, and please let me know if you have tried or like any of the things in the list by commenting down below or tweeting me!

Life After Deployment

It has been two and a half months since Rich came home properly from Afghanistan, so I finally feel like I can look back on the seven months he was away with some perspective.

I honestly don't know how I managed to stay so positive. I think my technique for coping was to put my head down and bury my way through the months, so it's only now that I'm out of the other side that I can put my head up and see how far I came. It's not necessarily a bad method of coping, as it worked, but I'm not sure I will use it again. I cut myself off from a lot of emotions, and it put a bit of distance between the two of us, but being back together again has meant that we are getting back to being as close as we were before he left.

This time when Rich came home I didn't have lots of time off work, just the day and the weekends, so it took us a lot longer to get back into sync with each other. He was finding it strange being back at home, and I was resenting having my peaceful order disturbed, and we were also expecting far too much of each other. Luckily going on holiday and being removed from the stresses and responsibilities of everyday life fixed that for us. My biggest recommendation for any couple reuniting after a long time of being apart is to take at least a weeks holiday together pretty sharpish after returning.

Since being back we have both realised exactly how much each other had to deal with, I have heard many more stories from Rich of things he didn't necessarily want to or think of telling me whilst he was out there, and he has realised how much hard work it was keeping the house going and all the other stuff I had to do by myself. It has made us appreciate each other so much more, and we have been so much closer recently than we have ever been before as a result of it.

I don't think I could manage if Rich had to go away again now, but by the time he will potentially next have to deploy I'm sure I will have forgotten most of the horrible parts and be able to get through it again. I'm still keeping everything crossed though that there will be nothing longer than two weeks for at least a year, but I doubt I'll get my wish!

Sorry for the more serious blog post today, it's just something I have felt like I need to get online and off my chest. If you made it to the end, I salute you!

Blogging and Life

Rachel Long Exposure Night Photography

So, I've been a bit missing around these parts of late, haven't I?

I've already explained why June went mental, I did kind of reappear a bit during July, but then I've been thoroughly AWOL during August again.

I'm not going to apologise for it, because at times I have to take a step back from my blog and my internet life, just to be able to keep going. Recently, there has been a few posts from big bloggers talking about how blogging takes over everything, and to keep one up whilst working full time being an impressive feat. Well, I work full time, and have over an hours commute each way (in a car unfortunately or I could blog then!), and like to eat, sleep and live in a clean house. Managing to function and look after myself properly is difficult enough in a week, and as work has gotten crazy stressful recently has meant that my brain basically shuts down when I walk in the door at 5:45 every evening.

Rich has been off work this month though, so as he has been super amazing and doing the majority of the housework (apart from the laundry, which I bizarrely really enjoy doing?!) I have managed to whittle down my to do list to a sensible level and hopefully I can return to blogging again!

I will never be a consistent blogger, but I promise you that every post you get from me will have had plenty of time and effort put into it, and I will keep coming back to you. I love each and every one of the 78 of you for not giving up on me, if I could give you all some cake I would.

PS - how cool is that photo?! I was messing around tonight with long exposure photography and it was so much fun! My garden is also a lot more photogenic at night time it appears.
